Analysis of ECP Brakes

Following the May 2015 Department of Transportation (DOT) rulemaking on electronically-controlled pneumatic (ECP) brakes for unit crude oil and ethanol trains, TTCI reviewed DOT analyses and performed a study evaluating the potential benefits of ECP brakes in derailment scenarios, finding minimal benefits as compared to the DOT study. In 2017, efforts included reviewing DOT testing, supporting a National Academy of Sciences review of the DOT work, and responding to an updated DOT regulatory impact analysis. The efforts of TTCI, AAR, and industry culminated in DOT repealing the rule.
