Utilizing Drones in Research and Training

TTCI has integrated small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS) aircraft into the research, inspection, testing and training components of its daily operations. In 2017, SERTC received several requests for the use of drones during on site testing by rail research customers. The addition of aerial videography has enhanced our capabilities to document and support clients and vendors. A 2018 proposed IR&D project was submitted for further advancements in the use of sUAS in the fields of inspection and data acquisition.

SERTC has developed three new sUAS training programs. Management of Unmanned Aerial Systems for Emergency Response (MAUSER) basic, advanced, and remote delivery. Each course is designed to deliver current technologies in this ever-changing industry. In addition to our dedicated programs, SERTC has incorporated the use of sUAS to enhance other resident course offerings. Going forward, SERTC plans to include this enhanced course operations into all FEMA N-TED recertification materials.
