In 2017, it was out with the new and in with the old as we added another century-old bridge span to the High Tonnage Loop at FAST. The span will generate important data to support the Bridge Life Extension SRI. The old riveted steel deck-plate-girder span was built in 1912, and served on the busy Denver-Pueblo mainline. BNSF Railway recently replaced the span and provided it to TTCI for this project. A relatively new concrete span was removed from FAST, as its testing was essentially completed.
The deck ties on the span, donated by Union Pacific Railroad, are an innovative design using superelevated, glued-laminated timber ties. This is a first-of-its-kind experiment for bridge decks.
