PHMSA Grant Work

In 2017, SERTC delivered hazmat training to 755 volunteer and rural area first responders throughout the U.S. and another 326 responders via web based training as part of an award from the DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) in cooperation with The Center for Rural Development.

Through this program rural responders are trained for incidents caused by the transportation of flammable liquids by rail. Participants learn response planning and coordination as well as the importance of developing strategies while responding to rail incidents that allow the flexibility to adapt to changing events that may occur during an incident.

This remote delivery program has allowed SERTC to reach additional responders who may not have the opportunity to travel to our facility allowing for expanded opportunities to train our nation’s first responders.
